What do the Olsen Twins, Rachel Zoe and Beyonce all have in common? They have been illustrated by the talented Aaron Favaloro and now our RUBY Autumn/Winter 2014 collection has too! The Australian illustrator took some time out of his busy schedule to share his journey to success, sense of style and why he loves RUBY.
Tell us a bit about what you do...
I am a Freelance Illustrator who loves to put my spin and creative input into the world of fashion. I also love to surf, eat this wicked chicken Vietnamese dish and have been known to do emails from the bath.
How long have you been illustrating for?
I drew all over everything when I was very young and the bad habit still remains - I just can't seem to shake it!
How did you get into illustration?
I have always loved to illustrate and it has been something that I have done in my spare time, however as of the last 8 months it has become my new full time profession. I studied for a year at a fashion college in Sydney which gave me the fundamentals of illustrating. Also a disdain for maths helped a lot as it made me develop my skills during class! I wish I could say I planned to be doing this and yet I can't - this all kind of just happened and I ran with it. Riding this epic journey that illustration has taken me on, has been crazy and a big learning curve, yet I wouldn't change it for the world.
How would you describe your illustration style?
My style focuses more on the style of a person rather than the person, hence why certain facial features are left off. It really puts the focus on the individual's sense of fashion and personality.
What are your favourite subjects to draw?
Wow! I think this changes every day yet something that I never tire of is individuals or brands that have a strong identity and a sense of style that is authentic. I enjoy illustrating those who don't look at what others are doing and are in their own lane. A few who I am constantly inspired by are Elle and Tash from They All Hate Us. I also love Margaret Zhang for bringing fun to fashion.
What is the most exciting project you've worked on so far?
I have worked on so many fun projects, yet one that stands out is working with Estee Lauder on their Pure Colour Envy lipstick launch. It was such an amazing company to work with and their dream team was the icing on the cake.
What did you love about drawing our RUBY A/W 2014 image?
The fresh take on fashion, the prints and the clash of textures in the range was very inspiring.
Where do you want to be in five years?
Alive! But to also have a very balanced work life attitude and to enjoy learning and being challenged.
Thanks Aaron! We love the RUBY illustration you drew for us x
