My City: Rose Mciver

This is the first in a series of posts where we will chat to our RUBY friends who are doing awesome things overseas about their ten favourite things to do in their new home.

First up, we had the pleasure of speaking to the lovely and super talented New Zealand actress Rose McIver about ten of her favourite things to do in Los Angeles!

Rose’s acting career started out at the age of three, after appearing in The Piano. Since then, Rose has featured in numerous television and feature films, including The Lovely Bones and Maddigan's Quest.

My name is Rose McIver and I am an actress, born in Auckland, and currently living in Los Angeles. I have spent the past few years here establishing a career in film and television and have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by great people both from home and abroad to enjoy the experience with.

What I have really grown to love about Los Angeles is that you can find whatever you are looking for within a couple of hours from home. Whether its the hiking trails in Malibu, the snow atop Big Bear mountain, grungy flea markets out at The Rose Bowl Stadium or the speakeasy bars in Koreatown, it's all a short drive away.

  1. Coffee + Food

A super cute little cafe on Melrose Ave with Australian baristas. Easily the best coffee I've found in LA and great service to boot.

  2. Knott's Berry Farm

The dodgiest old theme park I've ever been to with a handful of great rides which I'm addicted to. The hosts and hostesses are dressed in this traditional American Settler's garb and it's often so quiet it's like one big ghost town. Benjamin Hoeksema took this great picture.

  3. Griffith Park

This is a reserve that you can hike in, leading up to the observatory on top of the hill. It's beautiful, serene, only minutes from Hollywood and has a great woodsy cafe called The Trails where you can enjoy a well-earned lemonade after your walk.

  4. The Laemmle Theatre, Pasadena

A classic old movie theatre that screens films with smaller releases and is just down the road from a couple of very quaint tea houses.

  5. Goodwill Thrift Stores

These are well priced op shops that you can spend hours sifting through. They aren't overpriced and I have found many treasures here!

  6. Sycamore Cove

A beautiful bay north of Malibu where I went camping with some friends. It is a dream to get back on the coastline, where it feels more like home and this particular spot has the added bonus of dolphins and seals as inhabitants, that you can swim right up next to.

  7. Silverlake

This is a suburb East of Hollywood where I sublet an apartment for sometime last year. It is the home of a lot of artists and musicians and it very much has the vibe of Wellington to me, where I used to live. There is one particular graffiti artist called 'ManBeast' who's sentimental hits became a bit of an obsession of mine for a while.

  8. The Dodgers Stadium

It was tight between this and the Staples Center, both of which are sporting venues where I saw amazing games played. There is such a festive spirit at these events and the dodgers stadium is an enormous arena where I watched my first baseball game and whole-heartedly participated in a rendition of 'Take Me Back to the Ball Game.'

  9. Dimples Karaoke Bar

A hilarious old dive bar in 'The Valley,' which is a place loaded with stigma for most unfair reasons. It has some of the greatest locals and the host, who is about 75, calls himself Mr Dimples and sprays a foam machine most generously on the unsuspecting new victims who get up to sing.

  10. Our Lounge

I am fortunate enough to live with one of my best friends, Fleur Saville, in a rambling old Hollywood home built in the 1930's. Over the years it has had various tacky renovations but it has so much heart and personality and has housed some great dinner parties.

We asked Rose what her favourite pieces are from the RUBY & Liam autumn/winter 2013 collections...

It's hard to choose only three, but my favorite items would have to be the RUBY Pretty Thing Sweater and the RUBY Round Midnight Dress.
