Ball season is one of our favourite times of the year. We love getting dressed up for special occasions! We caught up with Clare Andrew, founder of exciting social community Les Gens about Le Gens' first major event, a glamorous masquerade ball, and her top tips for getting ball-ready.
Tell us about Les Gens....
Les Gens provides access to unique social occasions for Auckland's brightest movers and makers. Focused on connecting creative, like-minded people the membership is based on referral from its existing members and aligning interests of the group. Les Gens is a social community where work and play intersect; where fellow members are future friends and collaborators.
How did the idea for a masquerade ball come about?
For our first major event I wanted to put on something amazing in a unique location. Les Gens is all about connecting like-minded people; but New Zealanders can be a little shy so I thought it would be intriguing to have a masquerade event. Everyone loves a chance to be mysterious. Hosting the ball at a private historic mansion gave it a kick of glamour we don't often see at clubs and parties here. I wanted to do something really special and give our members a night they wouldn't forget.
What were the highlights from the ball?
The incredible outfits and masks - everyone really got into it; the mystery added some real magic to the evening. People kept saying that it felt like being in a movie! Maybe it's because of the mystery that people got out of their shells... it was amazing to watch people who have never met before get acquainted and connect, and the dance floor totally went off! Beautiful cocktails by Grey Goose and East Imperial also went down very well.
What are you top five tips when getting ready for a special night?
1. Knowing what look you want to go for makes the process a lot easier. For the Les Gens Ball I knew I wanted something very elegant.
2. Always choose your dress first and take it along with you when choosing jewellery and shoes.
3. Have photos of the hair and makeup looks you are after when you go to the salon.
4. Get a good nights sleep the night before.
5. Leave plenty of time to get ready, often hair and makeup takes longer than expected.
What is your all time favourite ball hair & makeup look?
I like loose curls/waves, perfect skin, black eyeliner and a nude lip. Simple but elegant and not over the top.
