To celebrate Lunar New Year, we’ve teamed up with NY-based artist, Ashley Setiawan, to create a custom RUBY screensaver ~ now available to download for desktop or mobile. Inspired by the Year of the Horse ~ long associated with movement and momentum ~ Ashley's interpretation leans into that sense of freedom forward at full stride. Here, she shares the inspiration behind the piece and her plans for celebrating the year ahead.
Can you talk us through the inspiration behind your Lunar New Year screensaver design?
The year of the horse will be filled with much freedom and boldness, which are elements that I attempted to incorporate through this illustration. A strong horse centres the piece. Along with an atmosphere of fluid movements created through the lines and brightness through the stars, to accompany the horse.
Is there a particular feeling or message you hope our Rubettes receive when they download or see this screensaver?
May this upcoming year bring growth and a positive breakthrough for everyone. Just like the horse, I hope there will be much strength within all of us to persevere and move boldly throughout the year!
What does Lunar New Year look like for you ~ are there any traditions or moments you especially cherish?
My family aren’t big on festivities and we aren’t superstitious enough to partake in any rituals beforehand (e.g. getting a haircut or buying new clothes), but we use this occasion as an opportunity to gather around and have a deliciously massive meal together. Our tradition revolves around good food, conversations around the dinner table with some juicy family gossip.
