Q&A with Alma Proença
HOW DID YOU GET INTO TATTOO ARTISTRY?
I suppose I just kind of lingered around, got tattooed a lot at Two Hands, drew, and continued to express interest in learning how to tattoo. Eventually Spider (my mentor) offered me a job managing the shop, and two years after I took that position he offered me an apprenticeship.
WHAT DO TATTOOS MEAN TO YOU?
Too much for me to fit into my notes app!
WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
A multitude of places! Right now though I’m particularly inspired by my colleagues at Green Tide Tattoo, their work ethic is incredible and the love they have for tattooing makes me really excited.
IN COLLABORATING WITH RUBY ON THE TEMPORARY TATTOO SHEET, WHAT DO YOU HOPE RUBETTES GET OUT OF THIS COLLABORATION?
I hope they feel cute and maybe anyone who’s on the fence about getting their first tattoo will take the plunge, after getting to dip their feet with a temporary tat.
FROM THE RUBY COLLABORATION, WHICH TATTOO IS YOUR FAVOURITE & WHY?
I love the tribal & daisy’s! Especially after the RUBY team added colour to it. I like all of them though, I feel like they match the energy of the brand and myself quite perfectly.
IS THERE A NEW TATTOO TREND THAT YOU'RE LOVING AT THE MOMENT?
I genuinely love it all! But right now I am mostly drawn to getting American traditional tattoos, which I wouldn’t necessarily describe as a trend?
IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO BUDDING ARTISTS?
You just have to have the love for it, you should be willing to immerse yourself in every pocket of the industry and its history - and you should be excited by that. If you love it, and you respect those who’ve come before you & created such a beautiful industry to be a part of ~ that will reflect in your work, and you’ll do great. You shouldn’t ever lose the desire to learn. This is coming from someone who is still so fresh to tattooing, with so much to learn - but this has helped me.
WHAT DO YOU SEE IS THE FUTURE OF TATTOOS?
No idea, but I’m excited to witness it! People seem to be pushing boundaries with every style every day.
