Last week, Em swapped RUBY HQ for Parliament ~ joining Mindful Fashion NZ to talk about how Aotearoa’s clothing + textile industry can keep thriving. Come along for the ride ~ sparkle pants and all?
Hi, it's Em. I'm going to Parliament today with Mindful Fashion. Wanna come along with me on my little journey?
Business on top, little sparkle party on the bottom. Sheer pants are what you should wear to Parliament, eh?
What is Mindful Fashion? Well, it is an industry body that I founded alongside Kate Sylvester in 2019. The idea of it is that we work as a collective for a thriving clothing and textiles industry, along with contributing to a thriving Aotearoa. We are here today to talk to our elected representatives about how they can support the industry.
We got some names.
Can we just talk about how beautiful this place is?
Here is Juliette Hogan, our Mindful Fashion Board Chair, talking about how the clothing industry in Aotearoa contributes $7.8b annually to the economy, which is equivalent to 1.9% of our GDP. We employ 67,000 workers and 78% of them are female, so as an industry we're a similar size to the building and construction industry.
Mindful Fashion is doing incredible work to support the industry and we are calling on the government to support us.
