The irony of the collection that is in store atm being named “Overqualified” is not lost on me. We did a careers chat with the University of Auckland Women in Business members last week, and the barrel they are staring down is…uncertain.
It’s been 8 months since dad died, and recently I have been noticing that I am a crab, starting to emerge from my rock/shell (she’s a cancer you see)
I’m not all-the-way Priscilla Queen of the Desert on top of the bus. But I’m peering at what that might be like.
Also, big, outside of me, things are a bucket of freezing cold water tipped over my head. Sometimes it simply isn’t possible to stay in my shell. These past couple of weeks, that icy shock was the un- and under-employment data released by Stats NZ – particularly for youth, Māori and Pasifika people.
Far OUT, man
The unease I feel when thinking about that data is similar to how I felt after the Christchurch earthquake in 2011: our mental health infrastructure is not adequate to support the critical need that this will cause.
What is different about now v then is I have some form of power ((?) agency?)) to offer a *glimmer* of possibility.

What to do, what to do.
Well, to start, we can use our platform and our network to link seekers-of-jobs with seekers-of-talent.
Enter: The Glorious Return of RUBY Recruiter!
Looking for work? Of any kind? Insight into career pathways in a particular industry? Fill out the form via this link x
Our RUBY Recruiter Job Board will be the central public database of seekers-of-jobs that seekers-of-talent can peruse.

I have been thinking about ~ ~ ~ R E A C H ~ ~ ~ versus depth of connection. Our reliance on “low” effort digital communication. The (muted) family WhatsApp chat, the social post.
Quick to execute, it can sprinkle out far and wide. But also the essence of it can feel thin, the connection shallow.
I would love for RUBY Recruiter to be more than a digital job seeker database. I want us to provide a framework where the two types of Seekers can truly connect.
Wtf would that look like? I’m not sure!
Looking for talent? Or just keen to give a lil of your time to share your knowledge and make a major impact on a person’s life? Email / DM / gimme a ring / send me a love letter. Let’s put our minds together and work out how we can make this something more, something meaningful.

To be meta about it all, I’m going to use this letter to tell you the things I do to feel more connected to myself, that make my being spark up 😉
LOOK, SAVOUR
There is a magnolia tree that is at the beginning of my walk-around-the-block route. God bless that tree

LISTEN
We’re showing Liam Lingerie at NZFW this week (!!!!) and a very cool part of the process has been “having to” listen to music LOUD so I can choose a song. God I love music. It is medicine. Here’s a playlist of songs I was toying around with: here
Plot twist is: My Chosen Track is not on there! The Chosen One, I am beyond excited to say, is a soon-to-be-released Coco Solid number. Simply cannot wait to hear it LOUD LOUD LOUD.
MAKE
I went to a talk with (the late) Robyn Kahukiwa, and she talked abut the importance of self portraiture, especially in stages of great change. So I’ve been noodling around in front of the mirror, and it’s a fascinating thing to truly observe myself, for the purpose of depicting myself. The Self Gaze?

COCOON
It’s about time you all learned that I still: suck my thumb, have a blankey, and a care bear.

WRITE, BY HAND
Eg, this very piece! For me, it’s less Novelty Nostalgia, and more of Desert Oasis. I felt parched, and the blunt pencil from the Cranium game box gave me hydration

READ
Go to local library, choose 5 books from the “recommended” shelves. The last time I did this, I discovered There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak and I loved it

BE READ TO
Cannot recommend Kae Tempest reading their own book enough: here

FEEL IT
Totally, all-the-way focus on how it feels to be in the shower, water, heat, cold, feet on hard surface, out of shower, feet on soft surface, dry towel, wet skin, damp skin, dry skin.
